Throughout the novel and the film, Scout learns many lessons from her neighbors, peers, strangers, and wise father Atticus about the way society works, people think, and culture dominates. Showing the drama of racial segregation through the eyes of a child was something the makers of the film wanted to preserve and generally did a fairly good job of it. But they took the strong language and paired it with the innocence of a child,Scout, a girl who was raised to value every man whether he be a white conservative or an African American. Some of the other bold choices the directors and producers made was keeping the raw and frankly offensive language in the film adaptation, frequently using the term negro and slang term nigger. ![]() It made a strong statement about the importance of equality. The decision to release this film in 1962, with topics still being relevant and sensitive was a bold move. ![]() Although the story took place many years prior, the issues of segregation and racial discrimination carried over into the 1960’s and far, far after then as well. The film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird came out in 1962, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. They have made my story into a beautiful and moving motion picture. And few screen heroes provide as good a role model as Atticus Finch.After viewing the film, author of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee said "I can only say that I am a happy author. This timeless tool for imparting values to young viewers is a prime example of what cinema, at its best, can achieve. Though a racial slur surfaces occasionally, its use is clearly condemned.
